Statement
As senior geographic educators retire, opportunities for
young scholars will increase. The Texas State Department of Geography
and the Grosvenor Center for Geographic Education have assumed
the responsibility of educating and training the next generation
of geographic educators. At present, we have 10 students in
our Ph.D. program in geographic education. They are learning
from their classes and from their professors, but also from
each other. Their journey toward a high level of professionalism
is attested to by the fact that those students, last year,
published eight articles and gave more than two dozen presentations.
Texas State's academic
program in geographic education at the Ph.D. is enriched
by several related activities. The Grosvenor Distinguished
Lecture
Series has brought to campus national figures such as
James Baker III, the 61st U.S. Secretary of State, Karl Rove,
Senior Advisor to President George W. Bush and Gilbert M.
Grosvenor, Chairman of the National Geographic Society Board
of Trustees. The Grosvenor Center Fellows
program has brought to our campus-class scholars, such as
Patricia Gober (Arizona State), Brian Blouet (College of William
and Mary), Reginald Gotledge (University of California, Santa
Barbara) Norman Bettis (Illinois State), Sister Madeleine
Gregg (University of Alabama) and our graduate students have
had the opportunity to work with other national leaders in
a research capacity.
Our students in geographic education all play significant
roles in our bi-annual international symposium on research
in geographic education. If your interest is in geographic
education, Texas State is the right place to be at the present time.
