| Recent
projects have involved several geographic educators and have
led to various publications. In 1999 the Grosvenor Center received
a $152,000 grant from the National Geographic Society Education
Foundation to produce a content-oriented scope and sequence
for K-12 geographic education. That matrix
and a related educator's
guide have been distributed to thousands of teachers and
educational policy makers. The Fordham Foundation has supported
(2000-02) Grosvenor Center work in creating a joint history
/ geography curriculum for
the traditional US History course. Graduate class research projects
have addressed the university-level curriculum from the perspective
of articulation, geography as part of the general studies curriculum,
the nature of the introductory course and what constitutes a
satisfactory "major" in geography.
Other research in the department on subjects in geographic
education includes 1) distance education, 2) GIS training,
3) Information technology training, 4) minority student recruiting
by geography departments, 5) health of the discipline and
6) learning theory.
