Dr. Jose Luis Silvan-Cardenas Wins Prestigious Nystrom Award
Dr. Jose Luis Silvan-Cardenas (Texas State, PhD in GIScience, May 2009) won the J. Warren Nystrom Dissertation Award, known as the best dissertation award in geography, in the 2011 Nystrom Award Competition organized by the Association of American Geographers for dissertations completed from April 2009 through September 2010. Jose’s dissertation was titled “Sub-Pixel Remote Sensing for mapping and Modeling Invasive Tamarix: A Case Study in West Texas, 1993-2005”. Jose's advisors were Dr. Ben Zhan and Dr. Le Wang (now at the University of Buffalo).
Dr. Jose Luis Silvan-Cardenas is currently Associate Professor at the Mexican National Center for Geography and Geographic Information Science and Geomatics (CentroGeo), Mexico City, Mexico.

Xingjian Liu won the AAG Graduate Student Affinity Group Student Paper Competition in the 105th AAG Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Professor Jianjun Zhu and Mrs. Zhu from Central South University visited the Texas Center for Geographic Information Science and Texas State
Professor Zhu is associate dean of the School of Info-Physics and Geomatics Engineering at South Central University, and he delivered a lecture in the TxGIScience Lecture Series. Title of the lecture is: InSAR Technology and Its Applications.

Dr. Xuwei Chen Wins Prestigious Nystrom Award
Dr. Xuwei Chen (Texas State, PhD in GIScience, May 2006) won the 2007 J. Warren Nystrom Dissertation Award in the 2007 Nystrom Award Competition organized by the Association of American Geographers for dissertations completed from April 2005 through September 2006. Xuwei’s dissertation was titled “Microsimulation of Evacuation Strategies”. Her advisor was Dr. Ben Zhan. Dr. Chen was one of the first two PhDs from the Texas State Doctoral Program in Geographic Information Sciences.

Dr. Junmei Tang Wins Award at the 2007 AAG Meeting
Dr. Junmei Tang won the second place in a student paper competition organized by the AAG's remote sensing specialty group. The competition was composed of 15 students selected from a pool of applicants. Junmei received her PhD in May 2007. Her advisor is Dr. Le Wang.

Dr. Jack Dangermond Lectures at the Texas Center for Geographic Information Science
Dr. Jack Dangermond, President of the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), delivered a lecture in the TxGIScience Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series entitled "GIS -- Vision and Enabling Technologies."

Professors from China to Visit
Professors Li and Zhu visited the center and Central Texas during Feb. 7-14, 2007. Professor Li is member of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Li delivered three lectures in the TxGIScience Distinguished Speaker Lecture Series. Titles of these presentations were: Recent Research Activities of LIESMARS – China State Key Laboratory for Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing; What VisionCruiser Can Do for You; and Virtual Tang-Style Timber-Frame Building Complex.
